1494 : How a Family Feud in Medieval Spain Divided the World in Half

2006

To end the quarrel between Spanish's Ferdinand and Isabella, and Portugal's Joao II over which nation would control the world's oceans, Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia) issued a proclamation which laid the foundation for the Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494. The Treaty created an imaginary line which divided the entire known world between Spain and Portugal. This treaty became an international grievance for two centuries.
