The Fleury Play of Herod

1965

What may be attributed to the author of the Fleury play is the present form of the work: the scope of the action, the order of the scenes, some additional dialogue, and certain touches in the wording. [...] The primary sources for the events of the drama are the narratives of the evangelists Matthew and Luke. [...] It is interesting to note that the music for the latter part of the Angel's announcement and that of the Shepherds' reply to the Magi are taken from different versions of the same respond. [...] In contrast is the more assuming cantilena of the trope and the responds, and the severely syllabic setting of the sequence. [...] There is direct evidence for the participation of instrumental music in a play at the very end of the medieval period, a representation from the late fourteenth century of the Presen- tation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple.
