[...] From an administrative viewpoint, the content of the cartulary goes far in verifying our knowledge of the foundation, growth and evolving function of local preceptories as the focus of the Hospitallers' manorial exploitation changed. [...] The chronological and topographical make-up of the cartulary, the nature and number of its entries, and maps tracing the distribution of Order holdings in Essex from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries are included in the appendices.
