Given the centennial in 2005 of the grant of provincial status to Alberta and the passing of many of the people whom he helped to rescue from refugee camps after the Second World War, it is fitting that the "Legacies Shared" series should publish this volume now. [...] Hlynka wanted to explain to this "third immigration" the nature of Canada's democracy, to impress upon them the pioneering experience and the achieve- ments of the Ukrainian settlers in opening the Canadian west, and to remind the newcomers of his own role in drawing public atten- tion to their precarious existence in refugee camps. [...] The last term of his distinguished parliamentary career, 1945-49, coincided with the outbreak of one of the most crucial periods in the history of the twentieth century, the Cold War. [...] The advantages afforded by his parliamentary tenure provided Hlynka with an ideal opportunity to publicize before the government and the people of Canada issues of ethnic discrimination, the cause of Ukraine's freedom, and the plight of European refugees. [...] Most of the immigrants to Western Canada settled in a wide arc along the southern edge of the Canadian Shield, from the rock-strewn Stuartburn area of southeastern Manitoba through the scrublands of the Interlake to the Yorkton-Saskatoon district and along the valley of the North Saskatchewan River to Vegreville, east of Edmonton.
