As it is important to try to clarify the meanings that cluster about the term, my introductory chapter presents a summary of the de- velopment of the theory of the picturesque with particular reference Xlll xiv The Imprint of the Picturesque to the work of William Gilpin, Sir Uvedale Price, and Richard Payne Knight. [...] His verbal descriptions of Wookey Hole near Wells, of the ruins of the Austin Friary in Canterbury, of Lidbroke on the Wye, of the great forges of the Carron Works near Falkirk, and of the ruins of Loch Leven Castle are examples of the kind of realism which supported his writing. [...] The three friends stood a long while contemplating this singu- lar scene: but the two lovers of painting could hardly quit it: they talked in raptures of every part; of the old hovel, the broken ground, the blasted oak, gypsies, asses, panniers, the catching lights, the deep shadows, the rich mellow tints, the grouping, the composi- tion, the effect of the whole; and the words beautiful, and pictu [...] Interestingly, Sir Uvedale refers to the effect that the raised decorations on the roof make and how the architect makes use of light and shadow to give "more elegance and congruity to the parts." And this leads him to praise the town of Tivoli in Italy, where the buildings advance or retire "from the eye, according to the nature of their situation; while the happy mixture of trees completes the w [...] His concern about the relation of his house to the surrounding landscape may be seen in the sketches which the young William Henry Bartlett made from the terrace.33 The irregularities of the house, especially its roofline, and the effect produced by light and shadow and trees are evident in the designs which Hope and William Atkinson, his architect, made of the house.
