The Indo-American nuclear deal and its implications for Canada

Anita Singh's article examines Canada's position on the 2005 US-India nuclear transfer deal and its implications for Canadian foreign policy in three areas: its bilateral relationship with India, its policy towards international nuclear issues, and its effects on Canada's other foreign policy goals. The author argues that Canada's inconsistent support for the 123 Agreement has cost it an opportunity to be involved in negotiations at the international nuclear table. Singh concludes that Canada should engage India on nuclear issues and, further, that Canada should adopt a robust civilian nuclear transfer policy with India.
