We are committed to the development of a global governance system that will contribute to fulfilling the human right to food, strengthen the livelihoods of small food producers in developing countries and foster a healthy agricultural sector for farmers in Canada. [...] The persistence of hunger world-wide demonstrates the failure of governments North and South to meet their obligations with regard to the right to food. [...] Canada must re-think its positions and alliances at the WTO in order to advance the food security needs of developing countries and to protect the interests of Canadian farmers’ within a viable multilateral system. [...] The Food Security Policy Group calls on the Canadian government to examine its international policies through the lens of food security and that it promote policies that enable national governments to fulfill their human rights obligations, including the human right to food. [...] The Human Right to Food The persistence of hunger worldwide illustrates the failure of governments to meet their obligations with regard to the right to food, as articulated in article 25(1) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and codified in article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).
