Hère are edited, for thé first time, Thierry's commentaries on Cicero's manual on rhetorical argu- mentation, thé De inventione, and thé full-scale Pseudo-Ciceronian rhetoric, thé Rhetorica ad Herennium, with an introduction tracing Thierry's teaching of thé libéral arts, his schools in Paris and Chartres and thé rhetorical doctrine set forth in thé two commentaries. [...] Thierry's rhetorical commentaries are of interest both to thé scholar studying thé scope of thé intellectual milieu immediately prior to thé foun- ding of thé European universities and to students of literature and rhetoric. [...] Southern's further assumption that thé school at Chartres suffered an even earlier décline, immediately after thé disappearance of thé chancelier Bernard of Chartres in 1124,341 fmd more difficult to support; for every one of thé other famous masters of thé so-called School of Chartres can be shown to hâve taught there, at some point of time or another. [...] Firstly, William of Conches, a student and imitator of Bernard of Chartres, presumably taught grammar there around 1125, at which time ("in iuventute") he composed thé first version of his commentary on Priscian, which contains a number of références to Chartres.35 Later in life William left Chartres and in thé later revision of this Priscian commentary ("in senectute"), which belongs to thé late [...] Thierry was certainly at thé height of his famé then according to thé dedicatory letters of Hermann of Carinthia (from 1143)38 and Bernard Silvester (from 1148).39 He was further active, under thé title of "doctor Carnotensis," at thé condemnation of Gilbert in 1148.40 However, we do not know thé names of any of his students from this later period, to which belongs thé composition of a substantial
