Though there has been no clear definition for either the word "Nubia" or the word "mediaeval" in the context of Sudanese history, the phrase is used as a designation for the time span between the sixth to sixteenth centuries A. D. This corresponds with the period between the fall of the Meroitic realm and the rise of the Fung sultanate of Sennar at the beginning of the sixteenth century A. D. It a [...] The period is marked by the establishment of three Christian kingdoms in the area between the First Cataract in the north and the area south to the confluence of the White Nile and the Blue Nile, as well as the land to the east and west of the Nile Valley. [...] In the heyday of the Meroitic empire, Aiwa was certainly an area of settled life, and during the Christian era, and nearer our time it was the heartland of the powerful Fung sultanate of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries A. D. Optimally situated in the Sudanese heartland, a low basin formed by the valleys of the Blue Nile and the White Nile, the early Alwan kingdom was strategically located. [...] Aiwa, the kingdom of which Soba was the capital, was the southern- most state of the riverain Sudan during the period between the decline of Meroe and the rise of the Fung sultanate in the early sixteenth century A. D. It survived the decline of Makouria, and its existence marked the shift of power and cultural development from the north (i.e. [...] He came forth from the Great House, and gave unto me the sovereignty of the land of Sti and Alut and the Nine Tribes who fight with the bow and the country on both sides of the river and the Four Quarters of the world.
