Improving the participation of under-utilized talent of people with physical disabilities in the Canadian labour market

The key findings of this report call for more robust research that engages with employers and people with disabilities in the evaluation of programs and policies and identifies the most successful intervention strategies. [...] This has significant implications for the development of best practices and accountability, and ultimately the promotion of labour market participation of people with disabilities. [...] The majority of these programs (Allen et al., 2013; Hillier et al., 2007; Taylor et al., 2012) targeted people with autism spectrum disorder with the remaining studies involving people with undisclosed disabilities (Flannery et al., 2008; Lindstrom et al., 2009; Stumbo et al., 2008; Taylor et al., 2004). [...] Lindsay et al., Improving the Participation of Under-utilized Talent of People with Disabilities Most studies explored the social-cultural importance of promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities (e.g., Ball et al., 2005; Bengisu & Balta, 2011; Broughton & Strebler, 2008; Schur et al., 2009). [...] Such desirable characteristics revolved around the current workplace culture, ability to match individual skill set with the demands of a particular position, the availability of supports to meet accommodation needs, and the employer’s experience with people with disabilities (Gilbride et al., 2003).
