The evidence base for interventions with children and youth with FASD

6 Dec 2006

The current paper summarizes previous findings and updates best practices in FASD interventions with new information on social skills training conducted at UCLA, updated information on the Families Moving Forward Program at the University of Washington and a study of a FASD case management approach in Alberta. [...] All children in the study population diagnosed with FAS or ARND (alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder) and their families participate in the BRT and are taught self-awareness, decision-making, and verbalisation of situations and actions. [...] An intervention and a control group will be compared using pre- and post-test measures, with post-tests occurring at the conclusion of the intervention and at a 9 month follow-up. [...] Outcomes for the CDC Funded Controlled FAS/FASD Intervention Projects Partial data is now available for the University of Washington study and the UCLA study has now been published. [...] The preliminary results of the University of Washington study suggest a high degree of parental satisfaction with the intervention, reduced problem behavior, an increase in parental sense of competence, but did not find a significant reduction in parental stress.
