The second part of the report is devoted to the Conversation itself and is divided into key themes that emerged throughout the discussion: (1) recent evidence of immigrants’ economic performance and determinants of labour market outcomes, (2) strategies for integrating skilled immigrants into the labour market, (3) current practices and approaches to integrating skilled immigrants, and (4) researc [...] To address the issue of non-recognition of foreign credentials, the Government of Canada is supporting a variety of immigration-related programs to better attract and facilitate the integration of skilled immigrants into the Canadian labour market and society. [...] Foreign Credentials Recognition OBJECTIVES The purpose of the event is to improve understanding of the policy challenges of the issues surrounding foreign credentials recognition. [...] These include: a lack of proficiency in one of the official languages of Canada, the age at the time of immigration, an increased competition for jobs from Canadian-born and earlier cohorts of immigrant workers, and the absorptive capacity of the Canadian labour market to accommodate newcomers. [...] Although Census data show that immigrants generally self-assess themselves as having a good command of one of the official languages of Canada, the experience of many is that they are unable to speak and write the language at the level required in the high-skill workplace.
