The second half of the nineteenth century witnessed the heyday of the British Empire and the rise of the United Kingdom to the zenith of its power. [...] Sidney Herbert Having the honour of commanding one of Her Majesty's regiments, and holding the position which I do now, [Inspector- General of Cavalry] I have had peculiar opportunities of knowing the facts connected with a large number of barracks in various part of the country, and I must say that the statements which have gone forth to the public of the discomforts experienced by the soldiers h [...] The Earl of Cardigan Although the sufferings of British troops in the Crimea were probably no greater than in many of the earlier campaigns in which the army was engaged, the publicity they engendered led for the first time to public awareness of and concern with the condition of the forces. [...] The Commander-in-Chief of the Army, the Duke of Cambridge, also argued in the Lords about the same time that contrary to what was claimed the soldier had not been neglected in the past but was merely more appreciated by the public at the present.60 The attitudes of Cardigan and Cambridge were no doubt shared by a large number of officers throughout this period.
