The detailed assessment of the impact of industrialism on the deteriorating conditions of life at or near the bottom of the social scale, on the cellared and shiftless condition of the everlasting, swarming peasantry, and on the inexorably rising tide of social prob- lems, including the city's notorious morbidity, is particularly telling.
