This history records not only the development of Mac- donald College as a monument to Sir William Macdonald, but also the service to the College and to Canada of the scholars who contributed to the solid academic foundations on which the reputation of the College has been based. [...] The preparation of textbooks for that course, the marking of students' papers, and the clerical and correspondence work involved occupied most of my time, and it was only in the spring of 1950 that my resignation of the Instructorship was accepted and I was able to devote myself to the completion of the history. [...] I am grateful to the members of the Faculty and Staff of the College and University for information about their respec- tive departments, and to the officers of the University for ac- cess to their records. [...] He was a descendant of the chiefs of the branch of the Clanranald Macdonalds who bore the title of "Glenaladale," and whose estates of Glenala- dale and Glenfinnan were located on the shores of Loch Shiel in Inverness-shire. [...] Ian Og was made Cashmer (guardian) of the Clanranald sept and was granted the lands of the Glens to defend the passes from the incursions of the restless neighbour clans (one account men- tions the Camerons particularly).
