As part of the scientific congress concurrent with the ICOMOS 2008 Congress, which took place in Quebec City in late September and early October 2008, this workshop provided a platform for representatives of the diverse indigenous peoples of Canada, New Zealand and Australia who came to present the idea of the spirit of place at World Heritage sites from the point of view of their unique cultures [...] Its current research focuses on the scientific analysis of the sites of indigenous rock art of the Canadian Shield and on the in situ heritage conservation of indi- genous cultural goods in the era of glocalisation from the compa- rative perspective of Australia – New Zealand – the United States – Finland – Great Britain – Canada-Quebec. [...] In 1999, after ten years of land claims, after the return of the long house to Wendake and the return of rituals such as the Trip to the Land of the Dead, the (local community of) Wendake have organized a return of the Wendat diaspora. [...] The year 2009 will mark the tenth anniversary since the reintroduc- tion of the Day of the Dead ceremony, which had not been performed since the time of Champlain and the Jesuits. [...] While the details of the ceremony are private to the traditional practitioners of the Hurons, the result of that ceremonial recreation is a greater confidence and knowledge within the community – and that renewed confidence and knowledge can be shared with others.
