As should be obvious, the book is a collaborative project between myself and the Cree narrators and translators, and the form the narratives assume on the written page necessarily reflects the vari- able circumstances under which they were recorded and translated. [...] In the cases of the two Cree texts, Johnny Bighetty's "WThtikow and Weasel," and Cornelius Colomb's connected Wisahkicahk narrative, the organization of the narratives into lines is based on pauses in the oral presentation (cf. [...] The term was applied ini- tially to groups resident north of the Great Lakes in Quebec and Ontario and extended gradually to culturally similar peoples encountered by the English and French on Hudson Bay and to the west. [...] He identified the Crees of the region as using the <5-dialect and used the name "nahathaway" (Cree nehidawew "s/he is a Cree") to refer to them. [...] Although there were undoubtedly population shifts as posts were closed and re-opened in the wake of the 1821 coalition of the com- peting companies, the area was occupied by ancestors of the contemporary popu- lation since at least the early 1800s and probably much earlier.
