The site of the reserve is a beautiful stretch of country with magnificent views up and down the curving river, and all this land was part of the country of the Crees in and around the headwaters of the Qu'Appelle River. [...] Some of the little homes of the Crees lie at the entrances to the wooded coulees and others stand along the crest of the hills on the prairie level. [...] While many anthropologists and curiosity seekers saw the ceremony as a "remnant" of an "authentic" past, these outsiders failed to see the ceremony as the practice of a suppressed religion, whose believers were admonished to stop making lodges, the physical structure for the ceremony, and not understanding the purpose of the ceremony tied to the longevity of the people. [...] For all believers, this ceremonial cycle was meant to renew the earth and sustain the people for anoth- er year, and by the end of the ceremony, it marked the beginning of the New Year that guaranteed the longevity of the people and the fertility of the nation. [...] Amidst this standoff on the Prairies, the Rain Dance ceremony continued to be central to many of the followers of Piapot, despite the perse- cution about what they held to be their most sacred ceremony, and the ability of their chief to conduct the ceremony that they believed was necessary for the annual renewal of the world.
