The conventional announcement of the advent of spring often forms the point of departure for a meditation on the joys and sorrows of love gained or thwarted. [...] Some idea of the riches contained in the libraries of Orleans has been gained from the contents of two of the most influential florile- gia in the Middle Ages, the Florilegium Angelicum1* and the Florile- gium Gallicum,15 both of which were compiled in or near Orleans in the latter half of the twelfth century. [...] Traditional elements of the propempticon make up 4, where the poet declares his own terror of sea-travel as a pendant to the fears expressed for the safety of his friend in the first half of the poem.21 5 is a brief, spare rehearsal of the biblical version of Lazarus and the rich man (Luc. [...] The condition of the poet portrayed in the epigrams and longer rhymed poems is that of a performer dependent for his essential needs on the charity of church officials. [...] In the course of poem 18 the poet- performer acts as the imperious spokesman for Reims and increasing- ly identifies himself with the members of the cathedral school against the dangerous heretic in their midst.
