In the first place, it treats all aspects of the subject, the distinctive style of dictamen (appositio), the organization of material (panes epistolae), the three levels of composition (tresfigurae), the ornaments (colores, tropi, etc.), and the faults of style (uitid). [...] They had been dispatched by Pope Alexander in in 1174 to all the prelates of France, to all the abbots of the Cistercian Order, and to the abbot and convent of Clairvaux, announcing the canonization of St. [...] The title of the Introductiones in A, the earliest copy, is "Isagoge dictaminum ad epistolas componendas secun- dum magistrum tramundum." It is not too fanciful to see in this title a prospectus of the subjects to be treated, the style (dictamen) and the arrangement of the material (componendas), the two factors on which a successful composition depends. [...] Among the early dictatores only the author of the Praecepta prosaici dictaminis secundum Tullium followed the terminology of the Ad Herennium, but Transmundus did not work from his text.4 The author of the Praecepta had included in his work a number of the colores defined in the Ad Herennium. [...] He abridged the text of the Ad Herennium (not always accurately); he rearranged the definitions and examples of the Three Types so that the correct and faulty versions of each were grouped together for easy comparison; he omitted nine colores;43 he changed the definition of Conduplicatio (14.45) to heal an error imbedded in the text of the Ad Herennium;44 and finally, he replaced a few Ad Herenniu
