INTRODUCTION 7 B. THE CURING OF THE EMPEROR While all the manuscript traditions agree on the essential fact that an emperor or a close relative converted to Christianity after having been restored to health by the intervention of Veronica's Holy Veil, each of the tellings of the tale offers considerable variation in the major and minor details of the story, the answers to questions such as Who is [...] In spite of these numerous pro- phecies, and in spite of the fact that many of the books of the New Testa- ment canon were written after 70 CE, there is no description in them of the event itself nor any clear indication of what the disaster meant for the de- velopment of the early Christian church.7 Many of the apocryphers un- dertook to correct this omission by composing works that both announce [...] So it is not surprising that the seven-year siege of the city, its fam- ine, mass suicides, the physical punishment of the inhabitants (imitating the sufferings of Jesus), the enslavement of the Jews, etc., are all passed over very quickly. [...] The authors/redactors revel in the descrip- tions of the preparations, the ornamentation of the tents, the mistreatment of the messengers, and in the symbolic interpretation of much of what happens.13 The actual destruction of the city takes place in a very few lines, and does not specifically mention the Temple, although its destruc- tion is implied: "Et (Vaspasiens) fist metre le feu de toutes p [...] Sixteen titles and ten explicits identify the destruction of Jerusalem as either the exclusive subject matter or as an interest shared with the theme of vengeance.14 The evidence of the narratives themselves is strong: roughly half the text relates directly to the preparations for the attack, the siege itself and the final disposition of the city and its people.
