In order the better to bring out the rich plurality of historical sources within the encompassing and unifying framework of Aquinas' theology of law, this study is articulated around the three main doctrinal influences upon Thomistic thinking about law: the scientific and humanist heritage of Aristoteleanism, the religious proclivity of Stoicism, and the biblical and ecclesiological outlook of the [...] Thomas' theory of law is analyzed from the three perspectives of Aristotelean secular autonomy, Stoic cosmopolitanism, and Augustinian "higher reason." Then the relation of the common good to law in Aquinas is assessed from three similar standpoints: the polls of human history, the natural system of the universe, and the creational conspectus of the civitas Dei. [...] Whereas in the Summa theologiae, for example, the tract on law is situated in the midst of a comprehensive moral theology extending over the whole of the secunda pars, in the see moral problems are treated within an overall legal framework, namely, that of the lex divina. [...] Moreover, the very idea of natural law, as well as the historical continuity of the natural law tradition, is founded on that intuition (which is at bottom but a particular articulation of the intuition of being and its correlate, the principle of identity).
