William of Auvergne De Trinitate : Trinitate

1976

This page intentionally left blank ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The present volume, the first edition of the De Trinitate since that of 1674, has been in preparation for some years, and it is thanks to the cooperation and assistance of many people both in Europe and in North America that this work now appears in print. [...] Special thanks go to the library staff of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto for the facilities offered to me, and particularly to the staff of the Department of Publications of the same Institute for their generous assistance in preparing my manuscript for press. [...] This same Pope Gregory strongly rebuked William for his lack of initiative in settling the notorious disturbances at the University of Paris during the years 1229-1231.3 Yet William, as Bishop of Paris, helped to introduce the first mendicant masters to the University of Paris, by assigning in 1229 a chair to the Dominican Roland of Cremona, and by permitting a secular master, Alexander of Hales, [...] As a churchman, administrator and scholar, William both witnessed and contributed significantly to the formation of the new intellectual milieu which was being shaped by three rising forces: the universities, the mendicant orders, and the introduction of Aristotelian, Arab and Jewish thought into the Latin West. [...] As Gilson has noted, his outlook and style are deeply rooted in the Platonic and Augustinian reaction to the new Arab influences at the end of the twelfth century; yet both his critical evaluation of Avicenna and his in- sistence upon approaching philosophy with philosophical tools alone place him squarely in the century of Albert and Thomas.7 He thus transformed the old Augustinian tradition into
trinity middle ages, 600-1500 history of doctrines
