The wise people of the Shuswap and other First Nations can remember the distinct subtleties of their different myths and their versions of nature and the beginning of time. [...] The Great Spirit told them to go down to the bottom of the lake again and bring up the trees and all the plants, and then bring up all the animals and the fish and the birds and the whales. [...] The Great Spirit made a big fire and blew on it, and the sparks flew up to make the stars and the sun and the moon, and then everything was light like the sunshine and he took a handful of mud and squeezed it in his hands. [...] The chief would go out and get fish and find deer and moose along Knife Creek, and the pretty squaw made the fire and cooked the meat and fish, the babies came, and she made coats and moccasins for everybody. [...] The muskrats were happy, the fish were happy, the moose and deer were happy, and the big chief and squaw and all the little babies were happy.
