[...] A host of others fol- lowed, expanding the original English knowledge of the bay and ex- ploring possible ways out of it toward the west or north - Thomas Button in 1612-13; William Baffin and Robert Bylot to the north in 1612-16; Luke Foxe in 1631; Thomas James the same year; not to mention the efforts of the Dane Jens Munk in 1624, who reached the west side of Hudson Bay. [...] The knowledge of the bay and the realization that it had a wealth all its own culminated in the decision by the English to establish the Hudson's Bay Company, chartered by Charles II in 1670. [...] After an initial foray in the famous Nonsuch in 1668, when Groseilliers reached the mouth of the Rupert River at the southern end of James Bay and returned to England with a cargo of furs, the Hudson's Bay Company was chartered in 1670, with rights granted by the English king to all of the drainage basin of Hudson Bay, which they named Rupert's Land.
