The CWB pools the prices it gets for all grain sales during the year and pays every farmer the same price for the same grade, regardless of where the farmer lives or when the grain was delivered to the elevator by the farmer. [...] Regulation of the market and the monopoly of the CWB may well be done away with in the political climate of the 1990s; that will just strengthen the oligopoly of the grain buyers at the expense of every farmer. [...] The diversion of the public's attention to the state is only one half of the expla- nation for the corporate disappearance from the public radar. [...] Two years later, when Fortune ran a feature article on the major losers in derivatives trading, the name of Cargill appeared in the index but the company was not mentioned in the article.7 As the fifth- largest loser in the global derivatives market in the spring of 1994, Cargill certainly deserved recognition, but apparently the writer could not get enough information to include it in his story ( [...] The record from 1940 to 1960 shows earnings in the range of $2 billion to $5 billion, though it had its ups and downs, the bottom being stated as slightly more than $0.5 billion and the high being over $9 billion.19 The gross figures for the years 1970 to 1994 reveal the dramatic growth of the corporation.
