Cook Society at The Ohio State University in 1993, it seemed an appropriate way to deliver the message of the work and achievements of a largely unrecognized group of explorers and travellers who helped fill in the blank spaces of the vast unchartered map of North America to the magical 90 degrees North where all [...] They were to follow his trail, and like him, strive for a genuine human and scientific under- standing of the peoples of the north." Cook's My Attainment of the Pole was the first by an explorer which was dedicated to the Arctic's aboriginal pathfinders, the spirit of which continues in this volume: To the Indian who invented pemmican and snowshoes; To the Eskimo who gave the art of sled traveling [...] The North has inspired the thing of the way this "Idea of North"—to borrow Glenn music of Glenn Gould and Richard Wagner, the paintings of Gould's title—has been created, while simultaneously Lawren Harris and the photographs of Fred Bruemmer, the enhancing the reader's familiarity with the North as Place.
