The vast major- ity of the chapters first appeared in The Jewish Free Press in my hometown of Calgary, Alberta, though a few were contributed to Ha-Atid, the magazine of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in Australia. [...] On the one hand, scholars are ap- preciative of the valuable records that have survived the ravages of history, but at the same time they are profoundly distressed to consider the vast numbers of manuscripts that have fallen victim to centuries of forced exiles, book burnings and neglect, leaving us only a miniscule remnant of the total numbers of literary works that existed in previous ages. [...] The Italian Genizah: Proceedings of the Conference Held under the Auspices of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Jewish National and University Library. [...] Although the codex has generated some extrav- agant legends concerning its antiquity, such as the one that ascribes its writing to Ezra the Scribe, it was probably written closer to the year 900 C. E. in the Land of Israel, near the birthplace of the Tiberian vocalization system of which it is the most faithful representative.
