Ap- preciation of the "heroic" carrying-out of the apparently self-evident need for Christians to be "outward bound" on behalf of the lost, pagan souls of the world has steadily been replaced, in academic circles at least, by reflection upon the conduct of competing empires, their associated land and resource hunger, and the shifting fashions of the intellectual history of Europe and North America [...] At locations as far away as Prairie du Chien, in Wisconsin, the war breathed new hopes into some of the inhabitants of the Old Northwest that a territorial realignment might still be possible.11 With the death of Tecum- seh at Moraviantown in Upper Canada in 1813, the hopes of the Indians for a new dispensation were dashed, and with the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, British interest in American territo [...] At the university, an important source of influence on the young man was the Redemptorist, Clement Mary Hofbauer (1752-1820), the head of a congregation that aspired to lead the simple Christian life.41 The main objective of the Redemptorists was to spread the gospel to the poorest and most neglected folk of the world. [...] As a group, they tended to hark back to the reform-minded pietists of the fifteenth century, to the Brethren of the Common Life, and more specifically to Thomas a Kempis (1380-1471), perhaps the foremost representative of that outlook identified with the 'Devotio Moderna. [...] Overlapping with the reign of Maria Theresa and Joseph II was the personality of Franz Stephen Rautenstrauch, the director of the Theological Faculty Figure 1 Joseph II (1741-1790), Emperor of the Austrian Habsburg at the University of Vienna.
