Annoyed that the Italians were left out of the mosaic, I chose to rectify the situation by per- suading the professor to include the Italians in a research project on the history of ethnic groups in Southern Alberta. [...] In the final years of the feudal period (toward the end of the 18th century), almost all of the available land was owned by the nobility and the Roman Catholic 12 WITH HEART AND SOUL: Calvary's Italian Community Church. [...] To the peas- ants, God was a distant, unapproachable being, like the King, but the local saints and Madonnas were real personages whose power had been attested to by innumerable miracles.19 The relationship between the contadini and the saints and Madonnas was based on mutual interest and took the form of bargaining. [...] The contadino's disillusionment soon turned to rage as the bulk of the lands fell into the hands of the galantuomini (new middle class), who purchased property as it became available in the open market.26 The abolition of feudalism curtailed the wealth and power of the baroni and saw the emergence of the galantuomini as the dominant social class. [...] Failing to study seriously the problems of the south, the government erroneously assumed that given similar economic and legal structures, the south would be able to catch up to the north and in time could compete on an equal basis.33 The government failed to win support as well as cooperation from the contadini because they did not understand the latter's mind-set.
