[...] In general, though, my answers to the earlier iv Introduction questions pave the way for discussions of later ones, and I hope that you will find the progression from the rather strict analysis in the earlier chapters to the more speculative conclusions of the later ones very natural. [...] Dionysius maintains that it is possible, as we find from his words in his Epistle to Timothy, where he saith: "For the beholding of the hidden things of God, shalt thou forsake sense and the things of the flesh, and all that the senses can apprehend, and that reason of her own powers can bring forth, and all things created and uncreated that reason is able to comprehend and know, and shalt take th [...] It was also in that per- iod that the study of the psychology of religion was begun, so that the thought could arise that what was said in the scriptures might stand for a reality which was psychological rather than otherwise.11 The conse- quences of these tendencies and developments for the study of mysticism can easily be imagined. [...] Such studies as Leuba's The Psychology of Religious Mysticism, and certain chapters in the works of the psychologists Starbuck, Hall, and other pioneers in the psychology of religion embodied this kind of approach to the subject.
