1981

He is the author of The History of the Barometer, The Experimenters: A Study of the Accademia del Cimento, and Physics at the National Research Council of Canada, 1929-1952 (WLUPress, 1979). [...] It was made possible by a uniquely informal organization that operated with the minimum of red tape and enlisted the abilities of some of the most brilliant physicists in the kingdom, one of whom turned out to have the persuasiveness required to convince those in power that the de- velopment should be supported to the limit. [...] A magnetic field is applied parallel to the axes of the resonators, and at a critical field-strength the electrons spiral out from the cathode, passing the slots at grazing incidence and covering the distance between two successive slots in half the period of oscillation. [...] F. is designed to fulfill the following functions with respect to the defence of Great Britain:- (a) Detection and determination of altitude and direction of approach of raiding aircraft or formations, with a view to interception of the raiders, warning to the ground defences and air raid warning to the civil population. [...] In June, shortly after the evacuation of Dunkirk, a group of Canadian businessmen, deeply shocked by the events in Europe and scarcely less so by the inaction of the Government, made several hundred thousand dollars available to help the prosecution of the war, and with no other restrictions.
