Is women's legal right of access to informed decision making in maternity care assured in New Brunswick?

Differences in Maternity Care Access between Canada and the U. K. For the purposes of this study, it is necessary to explain the major differences which exist, in principle and in practice, between community care in Canada and in the U. K. In Canada, individuals are expected to take responsibility for their own health, and access services at the hospital or clinic as required. [...] I shall examine the ethical and legal aspects of informed decision making, prior to delving into the three major issues which emerge and overlap in the literature; those of control, power, and actual degrees of involvement in decisions. [...] Ethics The concept of informed decision making is supported by the ethical principle of autonomy of the individual, articulated in Nuremberg in 1948 (Jones, no date), which states that a person “should be so situated as to be able to exercise free power of choice”. [...] Ethics My proposed project was submitted for ethics review to the Ethics Review Panel of the School of Nursing and Midwifery of the University of Sheffield, and granted approval in February 2007. [...] As the data came in, weaknesses of individual questions became apparent, for example the lack of an answer option for ‘internet’ in question # 2, the ambiguity of question # 5, and the duration options of question # 18 exceeding the age of respondents’ babies.
