Short-term licence suspensions for drinking drivers

The purpose of the present study was to conduct an evaluation of the short-term suspension law in the province of Saskatchewan. [...] The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes, perception and practices of police officers in Saskatchewan on the issue of drinking and driving and, in particular, the use of short-term suspensions as a means to deal with drivers with low BACs. [...] Despite the demonstrated success of many countermeasure programs, the waning of the downward trend in the magnitude of the alcohol-crash problem during the 19 1990s has prompted renewed interest in the development of new initiatives to re-estab- lish the progress that was so evident in the previous decade. [...] If the offender is convicted, the time between the offence and the application of sanctions is often so long as to diminish the effectiveness of even the most severe penalties.
