Immigrant settlement services in the Toronto CMA

The specific objectives were: 1. to identify the most important settlement needs among eight selected groups of newcomers in the Toronto CMA; 2. to analyse the types of settlement services available in the Toronto CMA; 3. to compare service equitability among the different immigrant groups; and 4. to determine if any gap exists between service needs and service provision (that is, spatial match an [...] The census data were used to approximate the spatial distribution of the demands, though we are aware that the immigrant profiles at the smaller levels of geography (in this case, census tracts and neighbourhoods) were not necessarily the same as the general profiles for the entire CMA. [...] This list is part of the City’s 211 Telephone Directory system (also known as the Blue Book).1 The list used for this report was the 2002 Edition – the most recent at the time of the study. [...] Besides mapping, these data allowed the research team to perform a variety of spatial analyses, such as the delineation of service-provider catchment areas and the calculation of various indices to illustrate relative access to service providers in different parts of the CMA. [...] Table 7 lists some of the characteristics for the total immigrant population of each of the selected 8 groups, and allows for comparisons with the entire CMA population in 2001.
