Concepts and determinants of St. John's immigrants' mental health

The cultural mismatch and language limitations between immigrants and their health providers led to difficulties in the diagnostic process and therapy, and also insensitivity and lack of respect for immigrants’ values. [...] John’s immigrants, their understanding of mental health and illness, the determinants of mental health, and the barriers to accessing mental health services. [...] The goal of this study was to provide mental health providers and policy makers with information about the determinants of immigrants’ mental health that will inform the development of accessible and appropriate support mechanisms tailored to the mental health needs of the St. [...] Recommendation 8: We recommend that health and social services work in collaboration with immigrant communities, Memorial University, the government, and other major employers to host health fairs and educational workshops that provide information about mental health and illness and their relevance to (un)employment as well as about health services of particular interest to immigrants. [...] These mental health services may adopt the guidelines proposed by the American Psychological Association, which suggest developing multicultural and multilingual services, educating and training of mental health providers in multicultural sensitivity, and providing culturally and linguistically sensitive information about mental illness, mental health promotion programs and healthcare services.
