The lack of supports places a burden on the economy and negatively affects the physical, emotional and financial health of both caregivers and care receivers. [...] POLICY OBJECTIVE The policy objective is to ensure a set of linked measures that recognize the vital role of informal caregivers in the health care and social service systems. [...] The UK and several other countries use the term ‘carer’ to refer to informal caregiving while Canada and the US employ ‘caregiver.’] The National Strategy for Carers subsequently was updated with a package of reforms introduced in June 2008 as part of a New Deal for Carers. [...] As partners with formal health care and social service providers, caregivers should be involved — to the extent possible — in the planning, delivery and evaluation of the programs and services that affect their lives.
