Through a range of programs and policies, the Government has taken significant action to meet the needs of seniors, helping them to maintain active lifestyles, remain engaged in their communities and to stay well-informed about the services and benefits available to them. [...] In 2006, the Government of Canada created the Office of the Minister of State (Seniors) within Employment and Social Development Canada Profile of seniors (ESDC), formerly Human Resources and Skills in Canada Development Canada. [...] Thanks in part to these public information, services and benefits pensions, the number of low-income seniors in Canada has decreased from 21.4 percent in 1980 to 5.2 percent in 2011—one of the lowest rates In addition to delivering its own federal programs and in the world. [...] In 2012–2013, the Government (PHAC), in partnership with the World Health invested $600,000 for the final year of a four-year Organization, has played a lead role in the project, led by the University of Ottawa, to identify development and promotion of the Age-Friendly ways to improve emergency preparedness among Communities initiative across Canada. [...] This study is providing Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health and some of the evidence that is needed to make the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly, future program, service and policy decisions; the Government is working to raise awareness and and increase knowledge about seniors’ mental health.
