The purpose of this study was to identify key issues and recommendations relating to and in aid of working towards improvements in land use planning process in the region and the province. [...] Land Use Planning Processes and their Importance to the Region The Canadian Institute of Planners defines planning as “the scientific, aesthetic, and orderly disposition of land, resources, facilities and services with a view to securing the physical, economic and social efficiency, health and well-being of 2 urban and rural communities.”. [...] In Newfoundland and Labrador, the provincial government plays a crucial role in land use planning and management, in large part due to the fact that it owns and controls the majority of lands in the province. [...] In the province, three key provincial organizations involved in land use planning include the Interdepartmental Land Use Committee (ILUC) and the Department of Municipal Affairs and the Department of Environment and Conservation. [...] The goal of the ILUC is to ensure that “public sector policy and decisions related to land use and natural resource planning and management are consistent and 14 complementary”.
