In the province of British Columbia there has been a significant investment in both money and time in the establishment, maintenance, and measurement of a multitude of long-term silvicultural systems research trials. [...] These trials have generated a wealth of published literature on the impacts of the various silvicultural systems on a wide variety of values and concerns, and have played a critical role in informing and modifying forest policy and practices. [...] The silvicultural systems research trials in British Columbia have made a significant contribution to the development of forest policy and practices in the province and have the potential to contribute much more in the future. [...] These trials have been established in a variety of different ecosystems throughout the province and have generated a wealth of data and information on the impacts of the various silvicultural systems (e.g., shelterwood, single-tree and group selection, clearcut, etc.) on harvesting costs, growth and survival of planted and naturally regenerated seedlings, advanced regeneration, and residual trees, [...] The Alex Fraser Research Forest has provided sites for two of the silvicultural systems trials included in Table 1 and 2. One of the treatment blocks of the Uniform Shelterwood Trial is located on the Gavin Lake unit, while a treatment block for the IDF Mule Deer Winter Range study is located on the Knife Creek unit of the research forest.
