The trouble with triclosan

16 May 2012

We're in the midst of an antibacterial craze. Not just for hand sanitizers anymore, consumers can get antibacterial toothpaste, kitchen utensils, smartphone cases, air filters, garbage bags, hair products, deodorant, toys and socks! And as the number of antibacterial products grows, so does the presence of antibacterial chemical triclosan along with fears from many scientists that this spread is contributing to antibiotic resistance, and a rise in "superbugs." For this reason, the Canadian Medical Association and other organizations have recommended a ban on the household use of triclosan.
