Preoperative assessment of surgical patients is performed to identify individuals at significant risk of perioperative adverse events whose outcomes could be improved by altering perioperative management, including postponing surgery. The purpose of this report is to review the clinical evidence for a standardized minimum set of preoperative tests and their timing and to review the evidence-based guidelines regarding preoperative tests in this context.
