The hypotheses tested in the review relate to the accuracy of tests used in SES, the performance of SES in terms of yield and uptake, the effectiveness of SES in terms of language education and social outcomes of children, and the adverse effects of SES. [...] The NIHR authors noted that the study was likely underpowered to detect small improvements in the prevalence of hearing impairments resulting from interventions and that the observational nature of the study made the results likely to be subject to selection bias. [...] Databases used in the search include the Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews and Auditory Screening and Hearing Loss Prevention. [...] The review authors cautioned that the fact that the key studies included in the update were conducted outside of the United States was a major limitation to their generalizability to the American population. [...] Study quality was assessed using a modified version of the quality evaluation tool of the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD), but the authors‟ assessments of study quality were not included in the review.
