This paper outlines challenges and opportunities, benefits, the current silviculture framework, principles to guide the development of a new framework, and some questions to stimulate discussion on the future of silviculture in British Columbia. [...] The Ministry of Forests and Range is responsible for managing, protecting, and conserving the province’s Crown forest and range resources to provide environmental, social and economic benefits to all British Columbians. [...] They can improve the productivity of our forest lands and shorten the timeframe to harvest – helping to mitigate the impacts of natural disturbances such as the mountain pine beetle or land use decisions. [...] The Ministry of Forests and Range is extend the shelf-life of dead pine stands and close also increasing the number of woodlot tenure opportunities. [...] The removal of the trees during the commercial thinning covered the costs of the thinning project, made timber available sooner, and provided local jobs.
