This phenomenon and the need to understand it, meet the challenges it poses and realize the promises it holds prompted the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) to bring together students and faculty representatives, Canadian and international researchers, college and university administrators, federal and provincial policy-makers as well as opinion leaders from busine [...] Beyond our own interests, we believe it is in the interest of all Canadians to advance a holistic approach to postsecondary education; to strengthen the quality of teaching and learning; provide appropriate intellectual and financial resources our institutions need to thrive; and to recognize their contribution to our place in the world. [...] It supports the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and holds the conviction that research and education are fundamental to the quality of life in Canada. [...] These valuable benefits, inseparable from the economic advantages, broaden policy questions about the role of public and private funding, the definition of evaluation measures and even the objective of internationalization (for example, Helliwell asked: should Canada use postsecondary education policy to “cherry pick” the best and the brightest from around the world or “grow cherries” by strengthe [...] Globalization and the “marketization” of postsecondary education also had direct impact on the movement of faculty and students, curriculum development and the business of postsecondary institutions themselves.
