OHTAC recommendation : Interim report on endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms (EVAR)

The review included a presentation of the findings of the field evaluation, an economic analysis, and discussion by the committee. [...] Based on the above findings, the ministry funded a two-year field evaluation of EVAR in 135 high-risk patients at the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) in 2003. [...] The interim report includes an updated literature review, and the one-year outcomes of the first 24 EVAR patients and first 55 OSR patients. [...] The interim report and the discussion with the principal investigator of the evaluation at LHSC, showed that: (i) Mortality rate is not significantly different between the EVAR and the open surgical groups (0% for EVAR versus 1.8% for Open Surgical Repair). [...] The results of the one-year evaluation will address the question of longer term results.
