We the peoples 2005

17 May 2005

We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the Canadian International Development Agency; the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs; the Commonwealth Foundation; the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace; and the Montreal institute — Rights & Democracy. [...] We are particularly grateful to the UN Department of Public Information, the NGO office of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service, the New York and Bratislava offices of UNDP, the Arab NGO Network for Development, CIVICUS, Social Watch, and the many other civil society networks who helped circulate the invitation to participate in our 2005 survey. [...] It was directed to NGOs with consultative status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the UN and to other organizations and movements The key findings and not formally connected to the United Nations. [...] They embody specific targets and timelines for achieving many of the objectives of the Declaration: to alleviate worldwide poverty, hunger, and disease; to globalize human rights, the equality of women, and environmental protection; and to create fair rules of trade, increase development assis- tance, and put an end to unsustainable debt. [...] Because the promises remain significantly unfulfilled, and the goals unmet, there must be a fresh commitment of resources to the objectives of the Declaration and clear markers for progress over the next five years.
