This Report uses a strengths-based approach and the contents highlight the strategies, policies, and practices that identify, acknowledge, and leverage the strengths and resources of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous communities across Canada. [...] The Commission was mandated to: the University of Manitoba “reveal to Canadians the complex truth about the history and the ongoing was created to preserve legacy of church-run residential schools…” and, “guide and inspire a the memory and legacy of process of truth and healing, leading toward reconciliation within Canada’s Residential Aboriginal families, and between Aboriginal peoples and non-Ab [...] A trauma-informed service provider, organization, and system realizes self-awareness, and strengthen the widespread impact of trauma and understands potential paths for the skills of those who work healing; recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in staff, clients, directly and indirectly with patients, residents, and others involved in the system; and responds by Indigenous peoples. [...] We call upon medical and nursing schools in Canada to require all students to take a course dealing with Aboriginal health issues, including the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, and Indigenous teachings and practices.
