In the USA, it has been collected in the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine, but also on the Ozark Plateau and in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. [...] The cause of the disappearance of the Black- foam Lichen from these provinces is uncertain, but it is significant that declines have also been observed in adjacent states of the USA.
