In the USA, it has been collected in the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine, but also on the Ozark Plateau and in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. [...] The cause of the disappearance of the Black- foam Lichen from these provinces is uncertain, but it is significant that declines have also been observed in adjacent states of the USA. [...] The meristematic zone, at the tips of the Anzia lobes, initially produce a small amount of lower cortex and then the spongy tissue, sometimes termed the spongiostratum (Lawrey 1984; Hensen and Dobelman 1987; Jahns 1988).
