Since the trends and levels in that provinoe in recent years have been generally similar to those in other parts of the country, the inclusion of the Newfoundland data has had little effect upon the Canad* indexes and per capita figures. [...] The 1949 base is the fourth used in the monthly employment record, going back to 1920, and the third in the payroll and average weekly wages and salaries series, instituted in 1941, and subsequently carried back on an annual basis to 1939 0 A post-war reference period has been established in xxny countries. [...] It appears especially suitable for the employnent series, since the situation in that mar was relatively stable, following the period of immmediate poet-war adjustment, and preceding the outbreak of hostilities in Korea, with subsequent acceleration of industrial activity, particularly in the production of durable nanufactured goods. [...] From then on, adjustments were rade where necessary to link the old and the new records, based on the relationship between the converted indexes for-the industries and areas, and those calculated monthly on the actual 1949 base from early in 1953. [...] The si.tuation in 1952 was adversely affected by the occurrence of important labour-management disputeenotably in the textile, wood produot and oonstruotion industries.
